Athletics/Activities > High School > Welcome

Greetings! We are glad you have chosen to visit the Prairie High School Activities area of our website. We are sure you will find its contents both informative and useful.

We are proud of our school. Our mission to provide... "Quality Learning Today for Tomorrow" is something we constantly strive to achieve in all aspects of learning. We believe extracurricular activities play an important role in the education of our students, by providing that "other half" of the curriculum. Lessons learned in the various activities and fields of play would be difficult to learn in the traditional classroom setting. The benefits of being involved in activities are well documented and supported by research. Activities support the academic mission of our school and are inherently educational.

Students involved in activity programs tend to have higher grade point averages, better attendance records, lower dropout rates, and fewer discipline problems. Through participation in activity programs, students learn about teamwork, sportsmanship, winning and losing, the rewards of hard work, self-discipline, time management, self-confidence building, and skills to handle competitive situations. All are skills and traits that will help foster success in later life. It is for these reasons that students at Prairie are encouraged to become involved, both in and out of the classroom, in as many activities as they can manage. Their efforts are encouraged and applauded as they excel in each area.

In addition, beginning with the 2000-2001 school year, all Prairie High School varsity student athletes are being asked to complete an Athletic Individual Improvement Plan. This instrument is used to allow the students to set both pre-season and post-season team and individual goals as well as assess efforts made to improve both in and out of season. Athletes are also asked to self assess their attitude and behavior using a rubric which encompasses Prairie Athletics Guiding Principles and Personal Performance Priorities. These rubrics are included on our web site for your viewing. It is our hope that students involved in athletics and activities will achieve the highest degree of current and future success as a result of their increased self-awareness and understanding of the role of extra-curricular activities and athletics in their lives.

Our patrons, students, staff and facilities along with the goal of continued improvement, contribute to the Pride which has been, and will continue to be, the trademark of Cedar Rapids Prairie.
