Project: Blueprint for Success Site: Prairie Schools Sheet Number: 6 Reading Initiatives Title I Reading provides a reading teacher to work individually and in small groups with K-2 students. These same students have access to "leveled" books to take home and read in the evening with their parents through programs such as: RAFT, HAWK, and RAP. Each elementary building has a Basic Skills Strategist who works with teachers and students to promote reading and improve reading proficiencies. The strategist offers a seamless reading support system as students move from Title I eligibility into 3-5 grades. Our focus on reading continues into the middle school and high school. Secondary language arts teachers continue to offer the basics along with challenging coursework for those at higher academic levels. |

Our education blueprint allows us to "build" a school that offers a variety of amenities and still maintain that warm, homey feel. The College Community School District is distinct in that it offers the amenities of a larger school district with the hometown feel of a small district. This is evident in our reading curriculum. We have many reading initiatives that are district-wide, but each school augments these with initiatives specific to their building. In some cases, one building will pilot a program and the other buildings are able to learn from the pilot prior to full implementation. At this time, Prairie High School doesn't have the necessary data to chart a multi-year trend for 11th graders-changes in the assessment schedule will allow for this in the future.
