On
Tuesday, November 2, 8th grade students at Prairie Point Middle School and
9th Grade Academy had the honor of celebrating Veteran's Day a week early.
Army Corporal Gene Blount (Ret.) from Victor, Iowa and Army Air Corps Staff
Sergeant Leon Mehring (Ret.) from Cedar Rapids visited Prairie Point to talk
about their experiences during World War II and their recent visit to Washington
DC on board an Honor Flight. These two World War II veterans shared stories,
photos, and memorabilia from World War II. Their willingness to talk openly
about their experiences was a lesson that these 8th graders won't soon
forget. These gentlemen are the embodiment of what Tom Brokaw meant when he
said that they are "the greatest generation." Although Mr. Blount
and Mr. Mehring would not admit it, they are truly heroes and we are grateful
for their service and their visit to our school.
