Facilities Advisory Committee Meets to Discuss Projects and Growth

The Facilities Advisory Committee met Wednesday, September 26 to receive an update and tour of our recently completed projects.  Superintendent Dr. Doug Wheeler provided the committee with a summary of our completed projects at Prairie High School as part of phase I of the $49.5 million generated by the bond to add classroom space, improve safety and security, reduce operational costs, and increase community access.

Dr. Wheeler also provided a project preview for 2018-2020 which includes a new high school entrance, additional classrooms, remodeling, locker rooms and improvements at our three oldest elementary buildings. Elementary improvements will begin in the summer of 2019.

The facilities committee, which consists of parents, teachers and administrators, spent 17 months studying district facility needs prior to the February 2, 2016 bond vote. The committee studied enrollment data, county population growth and reviewed the needs of each school building.

“The facilities committee has played a vital role in addressing the most critical needs of our district as we address growth and appropriate learning spaces for our students,” said Dr. Wheeler.  “We will continue to revisit and reaffirm the 10 year facilities plan as we grow in enrollment and respond to local and state economic conditions.”

College Community is now the 15th largest school district in Iowa and continues to be one of the fasted growing. Our enrollment is approximately 5,800 students, Pre-K through 12th grade. The district has experienced more than 33% growth over the last 10 years.
