Successful Day for Prairie Chess Club

Congratulations to the three teams who competed at the Iowa Match Play Team Championships in Iowa City this past weekend. One Prairie team competed in the secondary grades (7-12) section and two teams played in the primary grades (K-6) section.

The team of AJ Kozich (12), Audrey Sellon (9), Mason Kimm (9), and Cole Younger (8) received first placed honors in the secondary grades section.

Our two teams representing Prairie Creek each finished in a tie for 5th place.

We have two chess tournaments in February hosted at Prairie Point in the cafeteria.

February 1 is the Iowa Championships for individuals in Grades K-5, Grades 6-8, and Grades 9-12.  The winners of each of these sections will represent Iowa at the US Tournament of State Champions in St. Louis at the end of July. February 15 is the Iowa Individual Play Team Championships.  This is a standard Swiss pairing format tournament where the top 4 finishers from each school are totaled for the team score (much like a cross country or golf meet). You may register for these events online at under the Iowa State Chess Association.

Parents are responsible for their entry fee.  The Prairie Chess Club will purchase the required memberships for the US Chess Federation (USCF).  Please contact Jim Hodina,, if you need assistance with registration.
