Leah Gass (6)
Leah Gass and Becky Johnson have a classroom of six students who are in sixth grade. They are very proud to have two students who were successfully integrated full-time at Prairie Middle School.
This classroom works on several different activities in math, language arts, reading, life skills, social studies and science. The class has a variety of academic levels, which makes every day challenging and exciting.
The students studied Africa in the fall and learned about several different tribes, customs, cultures, legends, and lore. They painted life size pictures of the Ashanti tribe in West Africa and displayed them in the hall. This included traditional garments, tools, and dwellings.
During the spring the students will start a cooking unit to will gain experience in planning menus, budgeting, shopping and preparing meals. This will incorporate a checking account unit, where each student will eventually earn a budget to plan their own meal for the class.
The class hopes to visit with a veterinarian and take a tour to learn more about caring for pets. Due to a new addition in the room, Taz, the students are very interested in taking part in all aspects of taking care of a pet. Some students even expressed interest in being a veterinarian as their career choice.
Our classroom motto is to treat others as you would expect them to treat you. The students are working very hard on respecting peers and adults and weÍve seen great progress so far!
