General Guidelines for Conducting the Knights of the Math Table/Round Table

Grade Level Math Fact Master Objectives

1st grade 50 + and - problems ( 0-9's) time problems (hour, half hour) money problems ( coins and their values)
2nd grade 50 + and - problems (0-9's) time problems (hour, half hour, 5 minutes) money problems (adding different coins)
3rd grade 100 +, -( 0-9's) multiplication ( 0-5's)
4th & 5th grade 100 +, -, x and ¸ (0-9's)
  1. Knights of the Math Table are basic math fact tests conducted in the classroom by the teacher once/week. Each student should progress through a series of 4 single function tests in the classroom.

15 minutes per week is to be scheduled for this purpose.
1st and 2nd grades - not timed or (under 30 minutes)
3-4-5, 4 minutes per single function test or per teacher decision

  2. Knights of the Round Table are basic math fact tests of mixed functions - given by the principal in the multipurpose room once/week

    1st and 2nd 50 problems - not timed (+, -, $, time)
    3rd, 4th, 5th 100 problems
    3rd - in less than 6 minutes +, -, x, / (0-5's)
    4th - in less than 6 minutes +, -, x, / (0-9's)
    5th - in less than 6 minutes +, -, x, / (0-9's)

  3. The math fact objectives are such that 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders have only 1 year to earn their Knights of the Math Table Award - Shield with 4 colored function squares and their Knights of the Round Table Award, 4 colored buttons that correspond to the colored function squares on the shield and their Math Fact Master Medallion with ribbon lanyard.

    1st, 2nd and 3rd grades each have a different Medallion/Ribbon Award

4th and 5th have 2 years to earn their Knights of the Math Table Award and Knights of the Round Table Award. 4th and 5th grade students have the same basic math fact objectives. (0-9, +, -, X and ¸)

4th and 5th grades earn the same KRT Math Fact Master Medallion but have a different colored ribbon.

4th graders will have a different set of KRT level ll problems than 5th graders

  4. MATH FACT MASTER II AWARD

All students in 1st - 5th grades can go beyond the KMT and KRT Awards and try for their Math Fact Master II Award (a distinctive pin on a special certificate)

To earn the KRT level ll achievement award 1st graders pass 4 computation tests

To earn this award grades 2nd - 5th must pass tests with computation and word problems

  5. It is expected that all students participate in trying to master the basic math facts for their grade level. This means all students should set a goal to pass the Knights of the Round Table Tests and earn their Math Fact master Medallion. First and second grade students are expected to also master their objectives for telling time and using money.

  6. All 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade students will start over each year with their grade levels objectives and taking the KMT tests. That is because 1st - 3rd grade objectives are different for each grade.

(In a few exceptional cases, some 4th grade students may have already passed 4th grade KRT tests upon entering 4th grade. They will continue where they left off.)

5th graders will start where they left off last year in 4th grade with where ever they were able to reach in the +, -, x, ¸ KMT times tests or whatever number test in the KRT level program. 5th graders are earning their 5th grade award when they continue where they left off. Reason: 4th and 5th grade objectives are the same.

3rd and 4th grade teachers filled out a KRT student status form last May to tell the 4th and 5th grade teacher where a student should start in the KRT program. Ask the office where these KRT Student Status sheets are located.

  7. 7. KRT PEER TUTORS KRT

Peer Tutors is a voluntary program where students who pass Level I and II of the KRT tests (8 tests) may elect to help a student who has not yet made it to the KRT level.

These peer tutors may earn a special "Thank You" Award Medallion and Red/White/Blue lanyard by helping peers practice their facts a certain number of times or by presenting evidence that the peer tutoree has passed his/her first KRT Test. Peer tutors may earn as many "Thank You" awards as they wish during the year.

  8. 5th Grade Students who become peer tutors in the 4th grade may start the 5th grade year as Peer Tutors.

Some 5th grade students may opt to earn their 5th grade medallion even as they are serving as a peer tutor. This is the student's decision as they have already demonstrated mastery of the +, -, x and ¸ facts in their 4th grade year.

  9. Peer Tutor Q and A.

  10. At the KRT testing site the KRT tests are already laid out in folders by grade level so students can easily find their test and get started right away. 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students in Level l who have 6 minutes to complete their test put their start time and stop time in the upper left hand corner of the paper.

Students in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades should be able to easily complete their level ll testing session in 10 - 12 minutes. First and second are not timed but teachers can expect students to return in 20 - 30 minutes.

  11. We have arranged for a parent volunteer to coordinate, organize and document the KRT program. This KRT Parent Manager will monitor the quantity of tests, buttons and medallions, record the 100% test papers . . and do the preparation of the awards.
