Relationship
driven... making connections... getting better and better.
Prairie Heights is one of
four K-5 elementary schools in the College Community School District. Although
we have a Cedar Rapids address, we are not part of the Cedar Rapids School
District.
College Community School district serves 3500 K-12 students that reside in
surrounding communities including Ely, Fairfax, Shueyville, Swisher, Walford
and SW Cedar
Rapids.
Prairie Heights has a rich
history of providing high quality personalized education in a nurturing learning
environment. We invite you to explore our website to learn of the many opportunities
for growth at Prairie Heights Elementary School.
What makes Prairie Heights
unique?
- We refocus every morning
by reminding students why we are here... to become lifelong learners and
improve our personal character. Our first priority is learning how to read...
more importantly, understanding
what we are reading. We also focus on what character is.
- Priorities are clear...
continuous progress toward a predetermined high standard by all students
in the foundation-building subjects of reading, language arts, science,
and math. Balanced
literacy philosophy, principles, and practice are a common thread running
through all the classrooms.
- Expectations for appropriate
behavior are posted in all common areas in the building both with pictures
and with narrative. We approach behavior management in a systematic, communication
rich, positive manner. Level 1 is teacher-student characterized by prevention
activities and verbal resolution of any concerns. Levels 2 and 3 are characterized
by teacher-parent and principal-parent communications. 95% of all discipline
is resolved at level 1
- Knights of the Round Table is a framework for math fact mastery and math
application. This K-5 motivational tool encourages math fact mastery and
mathematical thinking
was recognized.
- Outstanding Parent Involvement
is evident by an active PTO calendar of support activities. Meetings are every
second Tuesday of the month, except December and May.
- Parent Volunteers...
We estimate 10,000 hours are contributed in the classrooms each year at Prairie
Heights. Volunteers play a critical role in all the 'extras' we are able to
provide Prairie Height's students.
- Plan, Do, Study, Act...
We use a research-based model for school improvement. Best practices in the
classroom and best practices with staff development are common themes that
help us improve teaching and learning. We have a Cadre of faculty that provide
academic leadership and an Olweus team of parents, teachers, support staff,
and principal that provide leadership in social, emotional, and behavioral
areas.
- Technology Plus... We
have totally connected teachers and students. We offer a comprehensive menu
of technology opportunities for students and teachers. Each classroom is
Internet
connected. Our wireless Computer Lab serves all classrooms. Each classroom
is equipped with an interschool connected TV and DVD Player. We regularly
broadcast
audio and video from our Instructional Media Center.
