Prairie Edge Suspension Center

Prairie Edge is located on the Four Oaks Campus located at 5400 Kirkwood Boulevard SW in Cedar Rapids.

The Suspension Room is located in the main hallway of Prairie Edge.

Our Suspension Center is an extension of the middle and high school buildings. It has provided us with a structured reinforcement of school rules and societal expectations to help students become responsible citizens and self-directed learners.

The Suspension Center provides an opportunity to implement supervised discipline and behavioral expectations in a location other than a school office or an isolated room with inadequate supervision. It is an effective alternative to the "vacation" type suspensions of the past.

Our goal is to increase the communication between school and home regarding behavioral issues at school. Suspension Center staff can provide sources for group or individual counseling, empower youth and families to make positive changes in their lives, and to develop a plan for successful re-entry after the suspension.

Sequence of Events

• Student receives a suspension and an administrator calls to notify the parent(s).
• On the following school day, the student arrives at his or her respective building as usual and reports to the main office by 8:15 AM for transport to the Suspension Center.
• Students are required to work on their schoolwork with supervision and tutoring.
• Students will be served hot lunch at the Suspension Center using the same method of payment as at school.
• Students are required to complete a re-entry plan for a successful return to school following the suspension.
• Students are transported back to their respective building at the end of the day for the commute home via school bus or other means.
