April 2001
- Students in grades 2-5
completed achievement testing using the computer based MAP testing in reading,
language arts, and mathematics. Results of this testing will be reviewed by
the students' teachers and the principal. Parent reports will be sent home
for each individual student who completed the test before the end of the school
year.
- Construction for the
new addition to Prairie View will begin in the fall 2002. Plans for the addition
were reviewed with the faculty, posted in the building, and finalized by a
district level committee. The new addition will address school overcrowding
due to our ever-increasing student enrollment.
- Prairie View will be
instituting a new student recognition program called, "Prairie View Pride
Patrol". A group of volunteer faculty members will make regular weekend visits
to our "Pride of Prairie View" students recognizing them for academic achievement
and citizenship. Students will receive a special recognition certificate for
their hard work and perseverance. The "Pride Patrol" will begin with its
first recognition the end of April. Stay tuned for updates on the Patrol.
- Students completed an
eight-week reading goal by reading over 4000 Accelerated Reader books and
passing the comprehension tests for each book. Students in kindergarten through
fifth grade participate in reaching this goal. There was a school wide celebration
for goal achievement led by Mrs. Lanich, principal of Prairie View Elementary.
- Prairie View students
participated in a school-wide Service Learning Project by supporting the local
Muscular Dystrophy Program. First grade students raised the most money with
this organization and integrated the fundraising activities in their mathematics
program. The school raised $500, which will be used to send disabled children
to a special summer activity camp.
- Prairie View will be
completing the first year of Extended Day Programming for identified students
in second through fifth grade. The program consisted of tutoring and the use
of learning games and activities to improve individual student achievement
in reading and mathematics.
- Prairie View Elementary
fourth grade students will be presenting their "Travel Agency" based upon
an integrated unit on the study of the regions of the United States. The
fourth
grade students will be presenting the travel agency to Prairie View third
grade and fifth grade students. These presentations are a culmination of
a
six-week study of the regions.
- Prairie View's Extended
Learning students will be participating in an international food fair as a
culminating activity in their study of communities and cultures.
- The fourth grade leadership
team will be meeting with students from Prairie Heights Elementary to share
their leadership journals and portfolios. Their work is the result of their
participation for the past year and a half in leadership training using the
Total Quality Learning process. Students have learned Total Quality tools
and have implemented these tools for problem solving and planning at home
and at school.
