First Semester Fitness Testing Analysis
Posted on 5/21/07 at 8:25 am. Link

All students enrolled in a Physical Education class are required to complete a fitness test twice during the semester. The pre-test is given the first month of the semester and the post-test is given the last couple weeks of the semester. The tests measure muscular strength and endurance, agility levels, and cardio vascular conditioning. The following are the exercises the students are tested on: sit-ups, push-ups, side-to-side jumps, heel kicks, sit-n-reach, and the mile run.

All students performing in the 50th percentile in all tests are awarded a black level certificate and t-shirt. All students performing in the 85th percentile in all tests are awarded an orange level certificate and t-shirt.

Data standards in our Prairie Fitness Challenge are based upon Prairie students’ results over the past years. Although we have broken this down by grade level and female/male, the following are the overall results in all of our classes. A total of 312 students were post-tested. The following are students who performed at or above the black/orange level standards. In our sit-up test, 240 students qualified for the black/orange level, which is 77%. In the push-up test, 234 students qualified for the black/orange level, which is 75%. In the side-to-side test and the heel kick test, 253 students qualified for the black/orange level, which is 81%. In the mile run, 190 students qualified for the black/orange level, which is 61%. In the sit-n-reach test, 240 students qualified for the black/orange level, which is 71%. Overall, 78 of 312 students met the requirements to receive the black level award and 44 of 312 students met the requirements to receive the orange level award. However, in order to qualify for a black/orange level certificate and t-shirt, students must be at or above standard in all tests. Thus, 39% of all the students tested received a t-shirt and certificate.

Based upon the nation’s findings of the increased numbers of youth obesity, our Physical Education department has taken a different focus into a more fitness-oriented approach, including activities that involve more fitness. Classes that our department will offer for the 2007-2008 school year are Lifetime Fitness, Fitness Training, Fitness Cross Training, and Strength & Conditioning.

All of the elementary students are currently or will participate in the American Heart Association's Jump Rope for Heart program. This is a community service project to help fight heart disease and stroke. The money collected will go towards research, medicine, education, and CPR training.

Our Jump Rope for Heart events will take place during P.E. classes. Students will be involved in many different jumping activities. Each child will receive a certificate and sticker for participating. Students who collected donations will receive Jump Rope for Heart gifts.

Jump Rope for Heart is a fun activity for students to learn about helping others and benefits of being physically fit.
